About the "Opening Doors" Scholarship Initiative
The Women’s Institute of Torah Seminary & College is proud to announce the launch of its Opening Doors Scholarship Initiative, a bold effort to make quality, Torah-centered higher education accessible to every young Jewish woman in Baltimore, regardless of family income.
Frum families invest significant energy and resources to raise strong, capable children. Yet the rising costs of Jewish life, private school tuition, kosher food, housing, and large family expenses, result in a growing pool of families who fall into what WITS calls the “unfunded middle.” These families may earn a steady income, but with seminary, bar mitzvahs, and camps, they simply cannot manage the added burden of college tuition without significant sacrifice. Many don’t qualify for any government aid like PELL yet cannot afford tuition on their own.
While some students may choose lower-cost or online programs, the WITS experience offers something significantly different: At WITS, young women gain the rare combination of a well-rounded, in-person college education and daily immersion in Torah learning. They receive personalized academic advising, career counseling, and mentorship that guide them from seminary through graduate school or into the job market. Just as importantly, WITS fosters lifelong relationships with teachers, Rabbanim, and peers, creating a supportive community that continues well beyond college. This foundation prepares graduates to thrive as Jewish women—in their homes, careers, and communities.
“Finances should never stand in the way of a student’s dream,” said Mrs. Sarah Brody, Director of Development. “The Opening Doors Initiative reflects our commitment to work toward expanding access and supporting motivated students whose families fall into this funding gap.”
Eighty-five percent of WITS students are from Baltimore, and many graduates remain in the city, strengthening the community as educators, healthcare professionals, business leaders, and community builders. With over 2,300 alumnae across the globe, WITS’ impact extends far beyond Baltimore, but its heart is here at home.
The Opening Doors Scholarship Initiative will:
-
Award targeted scholarships to students from families in the “unfunded middle.”
-
Expand access to WITS’ excellent, Torah-centered education.
-
Help reduce financial barriers for students.
Scholarships will be awarded based on available funds and established criteria, and the program will expand as additional support is secured.
Each year, WITS provides scholarships to students in need, but it is never enough. Too often, talented young women are turned away or forced to compromise their education—and the future opportunities a WITS degree can unlock—because of financial barriers. The Opening Doors Scholarship Initiative is our commitment to change that reality. By standing with these students, we work to keep the doors of WITS, and the doors of opportunity, open to as many capable young women as possible.
